You’ve seen “UPF 50+” on clothing labels and probably assumed it’s a good thing. It is. But do you know what that number actually means, how it’s tested, or why some fabrics protect you from the sun while others might as well be invisible?
Understanding UPF ratings helps you make smarter choices about the clothing you wear—especially if you’re active, spend time outdoors, or just want to protect your skin without bathing in sunscreen every two hours.
UPF vs. SPF: They’re Not the Same Thing
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) applies to sunscreen and measures protection against UVB rays only—the rays that cause sunburn. SPF 30 means it takes 30 times longer to burn than with no protection.
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) applies to fabric and measures protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This is a critical distinction. UVA rays cause deep skin damage, premature aging, and contribute to skin cancer risk. A product with high SPF but no UVA protection leaves you half-covered. UPF-rated fabrics block both.

UPF 50+ is the highest rating on the scale. It means the fabric allows less than 2% of UV radiation to pass through—blocking over 98% of both UVA and UVB rays. For comparison, a standard white cotton t-shirt offers roughly UPF 5–7, letting nearly 20% of UV radiation reach your skin.
What Makes Fabric UV-Protective?
Four factors determine how much UV radiation a fabric blocks:
1. Fiber type. Synthetic fibers like polyamide (nylon) and polyester naturally absorb more UV radiation than natural fibers like cotton or linen. Recycled polyamide—like the Shiny fabric used in PLAY swimwear—offers excellent UV absorption due to its molecular structure.
2. Weave density. Tighter weaves block more UV. Hold a fabric up to the light—if you can see through it, UV can get through it. High-density knits used in performance swimwear leave virtually no gaps for UV penetration.
3. Weight. Heavier fabrics generally provide more protection. A 220-weight fabric (220 grams per square meter) offers significantly more coverage than a lightweight 120-weight fabric. This is why performance swimwear typically uses heavier-weight materials.
4. Color and dye. Darker colors absorb more UV radiation than lighter colors. Dyes also play a role—some dye compounds absorb UV independently. However, modern UV-treated fabrics can achieve UPF 50+ even in lighter colorways.
Why Regular Activewear Doesn’t Cut It
Most gym clothes aren’t designed with UV protection in mind. That moisture-wicking tank top you love? It might be UPF 10 on a good day. Stretch it over your skin (which happens with tight-fitting activewear), and the UPF drops further as the fibers separate.
Wet fabric also loses UV protection. A wet cotton shirt can drop to UPF 3—5, essentially offering no meaningful protection. This matters enormously for swimwear—if your suit doesn’t have inherent UV-blocking properties, it’s offering minimal protection the moment it gets wet.
